On 2 April 1934, at the start of only his second full season, Whitney raced in Easter Monday’s Monaco GP.
Still an American citizen, he was obliged to drive in the white and blue racing colours of the US. In final practice, he had learned the hard way that his Maserati was no match for the Alfa Romeos of Scuderia Ferrari – taking the tunnel flat, as the Alfa drivers had, he spun and wrecked his rear axle.
His crew put in an all-nighter, and he rewarded them by finishing 7th, best of the Maseratis.
